She was awarded MVP, the highest honor given to a player in the league. Jill Ellis (the head coach for the U.S. women’s team) noticed her performance, and she was there to watch a game. Ellis sent her a text message congratulating her.
After hearing the NWSL's last finish, McDonald's was initially reluctant about moving to Buffalo. At the time, she was at a low financial point and worked in an Amazon factory. She stayed, despite the difficulties she faced in providing for her family and earning a five figure salary.

McDonald's faced many challenges when her son Jeremiah was born in 2012. Only a few short months after her son's birth, she was back playing soccer. She was unable to continue practicing because of her injury to her knee. Although she was unable to practice for a few months after she gave birth, she was determined to get back into soccer.
