At that time, it was considered unladylike to play soccer. When she was 17, she moved to Virginia, where she could play soccer and lead her high-school soccer team to a championship.

She holds a USSF Pro coaching license
Jill Ellis has been a coach for more than 20 years and has earned a USSF Pro coaching licence. As a young girl, Ellis played soccer for Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax, Virginia. She won the Under-21 Championship, as well the state championship, with her local Braddock-Road Bluebelles. She also played college soccer at William and Mary University and was named an All-American. Ellis won accolades for her coaching work, even though she was only 20 years old when she played.
Ellis is a former coach and has extensive management experience. Ellis has held many leadership positions, including that of the Development Director of the United States Soccer Federation. She was an assistant coach of the U.S. Women's National Team and coached women’s youth teams. Ellis was made interim head coach of senior women's national team in 2012.
