Emily Sonnett is one of the most accomplished players in the United States women's soccer league. She was a First-Team All-American twice and the Most Outstanding Defensive player at the 2014 NCAA Championships. In 2015 she won the ACC Defensive Players of the Year award. She was also named ESPNW Soccer Player Of The Year. She graduated from UVA and was then eligible to enter the NWSL draft. She scored her first pro goal against the Western New York Flash in the semifinals of the 2016 NWSL Championship. She eventually earned her first senior-level cap in the U.S.A and was an alternate at Rio Olympics.

The Canada team demonstrated a lot energy during the first period of their match against America. At the half, both teams were tied at 1-0. Canada's energy level remained high throughout the match. It continued to be lively as it progressed. The United States had more energy on the bench, but Canada was determined and set the pace.

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick

Emily Sonnet's penalty shot broke a record that stood for 969 mins. She was able to take the penalty kick even with a cast on one arm. It was Sonnett's international debut goal. Sonnett scored the goal at 34 minutes. Ashley Sanchez also scored in the 34th minute.
