The franchise was established before the 2006 season. It was first known as the Chicago Mercury. But, it is now more well-known than the Chicago Sky.

The Chicago Sky were largely silent during the most recent WNBA drafts, but local players were taken as high as the first round. The Dallas Wings selected Veronica Burton, a Northwestern guard, as their seventh overall pick. The Dallas Wings selected her seventh overall. She averaged 17.8 minutes, 5.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. She also reached double figures at the Big Ten tournament. Phoenix Mercury drafted Maya Dodson as Notre Dame forward in the same draft.
Trades
The Sky have made some moves to improve their roster this offseason. They made several trades to acquire draft picks and traded away players. They traded Alaina Coles to Minnesota, and acquired Kaitlin Lou Samuelson and Astou Ndour from Dallas. They also traded their 16th pick from the 2021 Draft, as well as a second-rounder in 2022.

The Chicago Sky is a professional basketball team in the Midwest United States. Magellan has been retained as the uniform sponsor of the Chicago Sky. The team's home games can be seen on WCIU TV, WMEU CD and WMEU-CD. However, some games are televised nationally via ESPN and NBA TV.
Game broadcasts
The Chicago Sky announced their 2021 broadcast schedule. The team will broadcast five regular season games on CW26. Lisa Byington will provide play-by, and Meghan McKeown will provide color analysis. Five games will also be broadcast on My Michiganiana in South Bend.

Fan base
The Chicago Sky's vibrant fan base celebrates the team and strives for improvement in the city. When the team won the 2015 WNBA championship, thousands of Sky fans turned out for the championship parade, shutting down downtown streets and taking over the famous Chicago Park. This was a community celebration and a great way for people to bond.
